Ri hand builds using Raku clay which can handle the thermal shock involved in the firing process of her work. After making the work, it is bisque fired and then glazed and fired to 1000 degrees. It is removed from the kiln glowing hot and placed into metal bins with combustible materials for reduction. It is this interaction with air and fire that creates the array of colours and crazing.

Clay in Motion

Bringing movement to form both in the sculpture and the finish gives ceramic sculpture another dimension.

The use of reflective lustre glaze and the ability to display in any orientation - showcases light reflecting different colours and completely changing the look of the form.

Decoration

The use of coloured terra-sigillata and feathers, sugar and horsehair leave imprints when burned onto the hot surface - creating unique pieces of art. 

Alternative Firings 

Ri prefers alternative firings to create unique surface designs .
​Raku, pit firings and the use of soluble salts are one such methodology that she is exploring
