The Naked Raku Process
Raku is originally a Japanese style of firing. This piece is has a sacrificial glaze that peels off after firing leaving behind the smoke patterns on the clay body. It is fired to 950 degrees and removed from the kiln whilst still glowing hot. It is placed in a bin of combustible material and covered. The thermal shock causes the glaze to craze and the smoke created in the reduction atmosphere enters the crazed glaze creating black patterns. Where there is no glaze the piece goes black from the smoke in the reduction bin.
Care Instructions:
NB- Raku Art is not recommended for outdoors or being placed in direct light as this will change and/or diminish the colours on the surface. It is not food safe or water proof. It has been coated with a ceramic sealant to protect it. Wash with water - do not use chemicals.
