3 years ago we moved into our home in Bacchus Marsh. One of the reasons we bought the house was so we could convert the shed into an art studio! Off with the swing door, an interior office, insulation, plaster-board, home-made pallet shelving, lots of paint and then cladding (also from pallet boards).
Of course having made a studio, the studio needed a deck. And then the deck needed a fence (woven with cuttings from our apple tree), a pergola (for G&Ts) and a sultana grape vine to keep the sun out (it's grown amazingly in just a couple of seasons). Oh and there was also the making of a brick path (reusing bricks previously located elsewhere in the garden) so I can get gas bottles down to the studio.
Finally, this year, we have added an adjacent slab and an awning. Under this structure is where my gas kiln will reside, plus a sink (we have a recycled water tank to locate to the back of the awning), plus more shelving (as the interior of my studio is chockers). We will also re-use the original swing door frame to provide a side structure to the awning.
So I am very excited that my studio will soon be complete and my production line in full swing.
Below are some pictures of the process.
I'd also like to acknowledge the receipt of an "Art Start Grant" from the Australian Arts Council in 2015 that helped fund some of the cost of the awning and kiln installation.
